Corryton History
Corryton was founded by Coryton Woodbury in 1891 in an area known as Floyd. He knew there was to be an intersection of two railroads in this area, and decided to purchase property in advance of the anticipated growth. In his plans for the anticipated boom city, he laid out roads and named them after US Presidents and trees.
Then there was an economic depression in the United States called the Panic of 1893. The Panic was one of the most severe financial crises in the history of the United States and saw the financial collapse of both railroads that were planned to intersect in the area now known as Corryton.
Shortly after the fail of the railroads, Coryton moved to Middlesboro, KY and gave away more property than he actually ever sold. His family gave property to two Methodist churches, and one Baptist church. The rural financial boom never happened, and the community of Corryton settled back into the quite rural treasure we know today.
